Cuckoo for Coconut!

You've probably seen an article (or ten) touting all the amazing benefits of coconut oil. Perhaps you've read about the antibacterial, anti-fungus or antiviral properties or maybe you've heard that it helps reverse Alzheimer's, improves diabetes and even helps promote weight loss. But how can you actually use coconut oil in your daily life? There seem to be 101 ways that people are now using coconut oil in everything from hair care to adding it to your daily coffee. Some of these things sound good, but who has time to actually try them?! Don't worry, I've tried some of them myself and I'm about to tell you why I'm cuckoo for coconut!

  • Skincare- I use coconut oil daily on my face as a moisturizer. It does have a greasier effect than regular moisturizer at first but it quickly absorbs into the skin for a healthy glow. It's said to have anti-aging effects and helps with dry skin and acne. I love it because it makes my skin so soft! As an added bonus, it offers a natural protection against UV rays and works similarly to an SPF 4. Not enough to block those dangerous rays, so don't give up your sunscreen!

  • Oil Pulling - In the morning before I hop in the shower, I take a table spoon of coconut oil and put it in my mouth. The consistency is a little odd at first but it quickly melts. I swish it around my mouth the whole time I'm in the shower. Oil pulling improves oral health by killing harmful bacteria and is said to help prevent tooth decay and gingivitis. I'm not a dentist so I can't say if it works but I'll tell you this - my mouth feels clean after and my teeth are whiter! Just don't swallow it or spit it down the drain!

  • Cooking- Coconut oil is high in lauric acid and is said to help increase HDL which is the "good" cholesterol. It can also sustain high temperatures without losing it's health benefits. You can use it in any recipe by replacing your current oil. It does have a specific taste to it, so you'l have to experiment. Try it in a stir fry or when making popcorn!

How to buy coconut oil:

It's important to be said that not all coconut oil is created equal. When you're shopping look for organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil. It does not need to be refrigerated. It is a solid at room temperature but becomes a liquid at about 76 degrees.

I hope this helps you find ways to incorporate coconut oil into your daily routine so you can take advantage of its amazing benefits!
